Dead Calm, Bone Dry

Dead Calm, Bone Dry is a Directors' Choice Finalist

What if you were forced to sail with pirates?
Captured and tried for piracy.
Then sentenced to hang.
Would you trade your body to the crew of the Flying Dutchman to save your soul?
Ricky did.
Some dead men DO tell tales.
And there is stolen treasure in this pirate story.

Last winter Ricky Bradshaw was another gangly freshman hoping to fit in -- or at least not get picked on -- and maybe catch the attention of Becky Nance, a girl in his biology class. Except sometimes Ricky "zones out" in class because he has absence seizures. If you've never heard of absence seizures, that's okay. A lot of people haven't. Ricky's teachers are a lot of those people.

And that's what happened to Ricky last Christmas Eve: he had an episode and ended up in pirate land. When Dead Calm, Bone Dry begins, Ricky is on his way to be tried for piracy. In the ship's brig he is about to learn that some things are worse than being unpopular in high school. MUCH worse. Like sailing to . . . Well, we best let Ricky tell the account. It is his story, after all.

Being Proud, Not Loud

Review from a teacher:

Highly engaging!

I read Being Silly, Not a Bully to my 1st graders. It is the first one in the Discovering The Difference series and a short chapter book that is highly engaging. The children were buzzing about the topics and had a lot in common with the characters. Using the questions in the back, we had a lively discussion.  Not only did they learn more about standing up for themselves and others, they learned about being kind and accepting others regardless of culture and ethnicity. I was lucky enough to have Myrna available online to talk with my students and answer questions. This was quite a treat and an amazing experience for them!  All of my future students will enjoy more books in the series. Myrna is truly an amazing author!

The Magicians' Convention

Abracadabra! This word has been used for centuries as a fantastical joke. Plenty of children have waved sticks in the air and shouted this word, claiming they can perform magic. However, for twelve-year-old orphan Toby, the playful word takes on a whole new meaning when he wakes up to find his grandfather has been kidnapped by a talking panther. Following the clues left behind Toby finds himself at the 999th Magicians’ Convention. Filled with mages, illusionists, and foes at every turn, Toby and his newfound friends, Thatch and Wesa, must find an ancient magical hat before an evil magician gets his hands on it first. Failing will mean the deaths of those they love and create a dangerous divide in the world of magic. The Magicians' Convention is the spellbinding first book in a trilogy of middle-grade fantasy novels. If you like action-packed adventures, imaginative worlds, and magical spells, then you’ll love Elena Paige’s mystical tale.

One Heart: A book for mothers and daughters of all ages

he minute our children are born they steal our hearts forever. A book about the unique bond between mothers and daughters.

The idea for this book came from a letter I wrote to my daughter when she was only two years old. As the relationship between a mother and a daughter often goes through hell and high water at around about the time of adolescence, I wanted her to remember that, no matter what, I would always be there beside her, her guardian angel, her greatest supporter.

One Heart is dedicated to the long sequence of women who alternate in the role of mother and daughter. It is a book about everything we would like to say to our daughters and to our mothers but often put off for another time, a time that never comes...
