Being Proud, Not Loud

Review from a teacher:

Highly engaging!

I read Being Silly, Not a Bully to my 1st graders. It is the first one in the Discovering The Difference series and a short chapter book that is highly engaging. The children were buzzing about the topics and had a lot in common with the characters. Using the questions in the back, we had a lively discussion.  Not only did they learn more about standing up for themselves and others, they learned about being kind and accepting others regardless of culture and ethnicity. I was lucky enough to have Myrna available online to talk with my students and answer questions. This was quite a treat and an amazing experience for them!  All of my future students will enjoy more books in the series. Myrna is truly an amazing author!

She just wants to keep her five brothers safe. But when her youngest brother Tom enlists with the army, the happy family life she’s worked so hard to maintain starts to fracture. Clara goes to London to work with Duke Murgatroyd, building a device to end the fighting. Clara is determined to do her duty, help win the war and send everyone’s brothers home. But life in London brings with it the distracting presence of Gordy, Murgatroyd’s 18-year-old nephew. Gordy is a loose cog, twisting her clockwork life out of shape and making her think of things that aren’t work and duty. Then Clara discovers Murgatroyd’s secret plan for the army, the city, and England itself. With war reaching to the heart of London, Clara and Gordy must match duty with determination if they’re to save a nation.

Archer

Mmm. Shoot an apple off his friend’s head or lose his food, horse and clothes? Some decisions require little thought.
Archer is the sort of boy things happen to. Orphaned as a baby, his gifts make him different to other kids. He doesn't understand why he's so much stronger and faster than other boys; why a sword feels so right in his hand; or how every arrow he looses at a target will hit the centre, even if his eyes are closed.
At the Beltane ritual, he must fight his friends to see who is most worthy. But his real battle is with an enemy whose callous disrespect for the natural order brings dangerous consequences.
This swashbuckling romantic fantasy will appeal to fans of action-adventure, jousting and magical realism. For fans of “A Knight’s Tale,” “Merlin” and “Robin Hood,” this is book #1 in a 5-book adventure series.

Middle School Mayhem: Down with the Dance is the first book in this action-packed, hilarious series. Meet Austin Davenport, whose fabulous luck landed him on this earth only eleven short months after his brother, Derek, putting them in the same grade. While Austin's brain power is unmatched, it appears as if his brother got all the athletic gifts and the family butt-chin, meaning their parents love Derek more than Austin, or so it seems. Join Austin on his journey through the tumultuous waters of middle school as he navigates the swampy and undeodorized hallways and explores the depths of the cafeteria's seafood surprise. Oh, and someone is plotting to take down the Halloween Dance, the one that Austin has his sights set on, so he can take Sophie Rodriguez, a girl way out of his league, but who doesn't seem to know it. Can he stay one step ahead of the new principal who has it out for him? Will Austin figure out who the perpetrators are? Will he save the dance in time? Will he wear a diaper on a stakeout? The funny and fast-paced nature of this series is meant for middle grade and early young adult readers. Beware! This series has the tendency to turn reluctant readers into eager ones.
